Where each route genuinely wins, including the cases where a dealership trade-in is the better call.
When a trade-in is the right answer
If you are buying another vehicle from that dealer on the same day and your car is in decent, retail-ready condition, a trade-in is efficient. One appointment, one set of paperwork, and the value comes straight off the new purchase. There are also tax mechanics in Florida that can work in your favour when the trade is part of the same transaction.
We say this plainly because it is true, and because a buyer who claims their route is always best is not being straight with you.
Where trade-ins fall apart
Dealers price a trade around what they can retail or wholesale it for, minus reconditioning and risk. Once a car is old, high-mileage, cosmetically rough, accident-damaged or not running, that math stops working and the appetite disappears. You get a token figure, or a suggestion to sell it yourself, or an offer that quietly depends on you also buying a car.
The other issue is visibility. A trade number folded into a larger deal is hard to evaluate. Move a thousand dollars from the trade to the discount and the paperwork looks different while your position is identical.
What a local cash buyer does differently
The transaction is standalone: one car, one number, no purchase attached. Condition is not a disqualifier, because the value is being assessed as parts, material and usable transportation rather than as lot inventory. Pickup comes to you, which matters when the car does not move under its own power. And payment happens at pickup rather than as a credit against something else.
The trade-off is that you are not being paid a retail price for a retail car. If your vehicle is clean, desirable and you have the patience for a private sale, that route may net more. For everything else, speed and certainty are usually worth more than a theoretical maximum you have to work for.
How to compare properly
Get both numbers, and insist they be comparable. Ask the dealer what the trade figure is independent of any discount. Ask the cash buyer whether towing is included and whether the number holds at pickup. Then compare the two amounts you would actually walk away with, alongside how much of your week each option costs.
For a running, presentable car, do both calls — it takes twenty minutes. For a car that does not start, the comparison usually answers itself.
Key points
- Trade-ins suit retail-ready cars bought alongside a new one
- Ask for the trade figure separately from any discount
- Cash buyers price condition-blind: damaged and dead cars still qualify
- Compare walk-away amounts, not headline numbers
